 20 January 2012

 All

 Highlights for this week:

  1. Training this Saturday Sunday – no change but note that the centre closes at 12 noon on Sunday.
  2. Training on Sunday 29 January – note that we do not have use of pitch 1 (Student Archery competition) and training will occur on pitch 4 for the U6, U7, U8 AND U9 at 08:00 to 09:30. There will not be a follow up session at 09:30 for the U10-U12. These older age groups should train on the Saturday evening 28 January ( - Saturday group, please note this change and provide some pitch space to these groups). I’m anticipating that numbers will be light as it will be Chinese New Year week so hopefully everyone should fit onto the pitches!

Have a great CNY!

Thanks

Jim

All

Please see below for this week’s update:

  • David Campese rugby coaching training over Chinese New Year – click on the link to find out more: http://www.davidcampeseacademy.com
  • Tai Po festival this coming Sunday at Kings Park for the U6-U11 and Happy Valley for the U12  and U12G.
  • Training over Chinese New Year – for those staying in HK the pitch is available on Saturday 21st Jan in the evening, and also Sunday 22nd Jan in the morning (note the centre closes at 12 noon on Sunday). Head Coaches and Team Managers of each age group can decide whether to train and notify their group accordingly.
  • We received some sad news of the passing away of Des Robinson, a former longstanding coach of Sandy Bay. He will be fondly remembered by those who are connected with who are now our U16 players when they were the U7J.
  • Valley Fort festival – we need to submit team entries by the 20 Jan so please make sure and submit player names to your head coach or team manager.
  • HK Sevens – you may be aware that the HKRFU has cut back ticket numbers for the public sale. This was in response to requests from the rugby community for a greater allocation of tickets. The club received an additional small quantity of adult tickets and so we will be reaching out to those that did not make the initial cut. In the meantime I would ask that if you still require tickets then to go to the Cityline website (http://www.cityline.com/eng/main.html ) and when the ad for the HK Sevens tickets comes up then to bookmark it to get faster access to the website.

Thanks

 6 January 2012

 All

Welcome to Sandy Bay 2012!! I hope that you all had a great time over the Christmas and New Year break. Now it’s back to the business of rugby!

 Here’s this week’s updates:

  1. Training this coming Saturday and Sunday – as normal, no changes here.
  2. HK Sevens tickets – some members will have been notified that they have not been successful in their application for sevens tickets. For those of you who have applied and NOT received an email from Bridget then congratulations, you have been successful. Please note, however, that many members have not been so fortunate for various reasons and I would ask that if you do not intend to use your tickets then to return them to the club so that we can re-distribute them to those on the reserve list – please support the club here! Ticket distribution, like previous years, will happen in first or second week of March. It is likely that the U6 will once again not be playing in any showcase events at the stadium due to time restrictions and all mini clubs could also be cut back on numbers for the Sunday marchpast due to safety concerns when leaving the pitch.
  3. Tai Po festival – takes place on Sunday 15 January at Kings Park. Tentative schedule is out with the U6, U7, U8, U10 in the morning and the U9, U10G and U11 in the afternoon. The U12 and the U12G will play at Happy Valley (- schedule to be advised but tentatively looking at the U12 playing in the morning and the U12G playing in the afternoon)
  4. Playing sessions – the pitches are in great demand and the club is hard pressed to cater for all players. Can you please ensure that you finish your session promptly in order to allow the follow on group to start their training on time.

Thanks

Jim

16 December 2011

All

For those of you who travelled across the water to Kings Park last week I hope you enjoyed the Flying Kukris festival. Some of the team managers have posted their festival report so I would encourage you to take a peek at them and get inspired!

Updates for this week:

  • Training as normal this Sunday but no bacon butties I’m afraid.
  • Volunteers from the U8 and the U12 for the clubhouse needed.
  • The pitch is open on the 25 December and the 1 January for our regular timings.
  • Some Christmas fitness training is taking place next week for the contact minis – contact your team manager for more details.
  • Tai Po festival – 15 January at Kings Park
  • Macau Bats are asking if we want to send teams over to them on the 18 Feb - anyone interested in coordinating this then please contact me.
  • Sevens tickets - more news to come but note that we are 30% oversubscribed.

 cheers

Jim

28 November - the day after the festival!

All

Hope everyone enjoyed the event yesterday. Special thanks to all the volunteers that played an essential part in pulling this event together and making it such a success!

Update for this week:

  • Sevens tickets – please ensure you get your application in on time. Note the deadline date of 2 December (THIS FRIDAY)  for your form to be in the hands of the secretary or for your envelope to be postmarked no later than this date!
  • Car parking – note that the Police will be patrolling Sha Wan Drive over the next few weeks to deter illegal parking. This is as a result of continued complaints, quite possibly resulting from cars being parked on both sides of Sha Wan drive and/or parking too near the hospital entrance.
  • 4 December – no training on this day as the sports centre has an all day event. For some age groups training is going to take place on the 3 December – please contact your team managers for more information.
  • 11 December – the Flying Kukris are hosting a festival. Because of limited pitch space and time, they have decided to host a contact rugby only festival (U9 to U12). However, for the non contact U6 to U8 age groups we will still have training on pitch 1 at the usual time.

 Thanks

 Jim

The first training / practice session of the season begins at Hong Kong University's Stanley Ho Sports Centre on the last Sunday of August. Training commences every Sunday morning at 8.00am for the U6, U7 and U8 Minis and at 9.30am for U9, U10, U11 & U12 Minis. Both sessions run for 90 minutes on pitch 1 of Stanley Ho Sports Centre. The rugby season runs through to early April. Each player needs to be accompanied by a parent during training. The early Sunday morning start is usually complemented by tea, coffee and soft drink sales supported by volunteer parents, and bacon and egg sandwiches from time to time. On Sunday mornings the Stanley Ho sports centre ground staff open the pitch gate to allow direct access from Sha Wan Drive.

Playing Kit
A player is required to arrive with and use:

  • A good quality mouth guard (available for purchase from the club house)
  • Rugby (soccer) boots with studs / cleats
  • Water bottle with their name on it
  • Club shirt, shorts and socks

New players to the club will receive their club shirt, shorts and socks once they have registered and paid their fees. Click on the kit policy link in the registration page.

The Club provides various training equipment including balls and tackle bags, etc.

Fees and Registration
Membership fees are $700 for the player and $50 for the parent of the player.

Click here to our registration page.

Registration also ensures that appropriate player insurance cover is in place, and ensures that you will be eligible to order Sevens tickets.

Age Groups
The Mini - Rugby Union (HKMRFU) has decreed that all players must play in their correct age group. Age groups are allocated to calendar years January to December. For clarity the age groups for the 2011 - 2012 season are:

  • 2000 - U12; if your child was born in 2000, he / she plays for the U12s
  • 2001 - U11
  • 2002 - U10
  • 2003-  U9
  • 2004 - U8
  • 2005-  U7
  • 2006-  U6

Playing Up and Playing Down
Players can only move down or up an age group for reasons of safety, usually linked to relative size and/or weight. If a player wishes to move up or down an age group the parents via the Club must apply to the Union and gain its approval. If you wish your child to play up/down or you have a concern, please speak to your child's head coach in the first instance.

Download the form for Play Up / Down ( Statement and Letter )

Coaches and Team Managers
We have highly motivated coaches and a team manager for each age group - all are volunteers. On your first day of training please introduce yourself and your child to the head coach of the relevant age group.

Girls' Teams
Girl's rugby is the fastest-growing of all sections of the Hong Kong Rugby Union. For the past three seasons we have run U9/10 to U11/12 girls' teams. We would really like to further develop our girls' teams this year and are looking for players and volunteers to support the existing coaches and promote the girls' game. Any and all girls who would like to have a go at playing the great team sport of rugby are welcomed to come down and give rugby a try. Girls up to the age of 9 are encouraged to play in the relevant age group mixed teams - in our younger age groups some of our best players are girls.

Hong Kong Sevens Tickets
Membership of the club provides an opportunity to apply for tickets to the Sevens. PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE WILL BE A CHANGE IN THE METHOD OF ALLOCATION OF TICKETS THIS COMING SEASON. This season we will be allocating tickets based on player attendance and colunteer parents' contribution to the club. Watch out for an update on the HK7's on this website later in the season.
