Dave Coniam - Running the HKUSB Mini Rugby Festival

I joined the Sandy Bay Mini Rugby Club in the early-mid 1990s when my eldest was about 6. I did the usual amount of lurking on the sidelines - until for some reason I got asked to be pitch monitor coordinator for the Festival around the mid 90s. This task involved more than first meets the eye as it hadn't been that well coordinated before, and some parents were a bit reluctant to help out as some had got landed with a whole morning monitoring session. Anyway, I did this task for a couple of years, trying to get very reluctant parents to take part and help out. Most of course did, but I remember for years trying to cajole one wayward parent who went by the moniker Blue Murder, coz, apart from being a name play, that was what he made me scream every time he invented some feeble excuse for not being able to help do his bit.

When Tom Armstrong became Chairman, it just seemed like he had too much on his plate already, trying to run the Festival as well as the Club. So I sort of stood in line while all the rest took one step back. And I've been running the Festival ever since. It's a big event - 3,000 kids and 4,000 parents - but it's been great fun doing it. The Organising Committee used to be a handful of us who bodged everything at the last minute. The Committee now gets up and running about three months beforehand, and in 2009, consisted of 17 members, all of whom contribute in new and valuable ways: every year someone comes up with a new idea, and, well, the Festival just seems to go from strength to strength each year.
