Sandy Bay Minis Report 2016-17

Posted On Jul 07, 2017

Another excellent season for Sandy Bay minis in 2016-17

We started the season in late August 2016, and following 10 festivals/tournaments, 2 all girl’s events, the New Year’s Day games, a fantastic club tour to Singapore and an unofficial ‘tour’ to Macau, we finished the season with our traditional End of Season party on 30th April 2017.

We held our mini rugby festival in late November and thanks to the incredible work of Keith Regan and the entire festival committee it was the premier event on the mini rugby festival calendar.  Overall we had around 320 teams entered playing over 630 matches on the four pitches at Stanley Ho.

We also welcomed back our regular international participants from Singapore and Macau with teams from Tanglin, Centaurs and Macau Bats.

Club Tour 2016-17

Our club tour took place again this season at the Centaurs International Rugby Tournament in December 2017.  With over 250 tourers and around 120 players, we took Singapore and the Jen Hotel by storm.

On the pitch we had 2 teams in each age group from U9-U12.  Our U10s and U11s both won their respective Cup events and U12s were runners up in the Cup event.

Richard Hawkes and Kim Lam Events

One of the major highlights of this year’s rugby was the unprecedented performance of our U12 boys at all levels.  The first team in particular played 26 games across the various festivals above, winning 25 and losing only 1.  This incredible achievement was even more impressive with the fact that they scored 102 trys and only conceded 7 throughout the year.

Our U12 girls also have a very successful year, finishing the year in the semi-finals of the Kim Lam cup at the Football Club festival.

This year we appointed Ben Roberts to the role of Head Technical Coach at Sandy Bay covering all age groups from U5s all the way through to U19s.

A big thank you goes out to all our sponsors including KPMG, Linklaters, Saxo Bank, Herbert Smith Freehills, Cyberport Arcade, Stephenson Harwood, Ricardo and ISG.

Thank you to all of the players, parents and volunteers for their continued support to this club and I look forward to another exciting season ahead.
